Post-Weight Loss Reconstruction

You did the hard part. Now let your body catch up.

Whether you lost weight naturally, through bariatric surgery, or with GLP-1 medications, you've already accomplished something extraordinary. If excess skin is keeping you from enjoying it, we're here to help.

Dr. John LoMonaco, double board certified plastic surgeon, in his Houston office

The journey most patients describe.

You should feel understood before you are educated, and educated before you are asked to schedule.

  1. 01

    I finally lost the weight.

Years of work. Bariatric surgery, a GLP-1, or sheer discipline. The number moved.

  2. 02

    My skin didn't shrink.

Skin that stretched for years often loses the elasticity to retract. That is biology, not failure.

  3. 03

    I started hiding again.

Oversized clothes. Avoiding mirrors. Rashes and chafing nobody warned you about.

  4. 04

    I began searching for answers.

Confusing procedure names, packaged 'makeovers,' and very few surgeons who specialize in this.

  5. 05

    I found someone who understands.

A surgeon who has spent two decades on exactly this patient and this anatomy.

  6. 06

    I completed my transformation.

A body that finally reflects everything you accomplished.

If this sounds like you

You are not ungrateful. You are normal.

The oversized clothes you still buy. The mirror you walk past. The rashes under folds of skin. The intimacy you avoid. The quiet frustration that the hardest thing you've ever done somehow doesn't feel finished. We hear this every single day.

  • "I worked so hard for this."
  • "My stomach still hangs."
  • "My breasts disappeared."
  • "I still don't recognize myself."
  • "I thought I'd finally feel confident."
Why excess skin happens

Your skin was asked to do something it couldn't undo.

Skin stretches to cover whatever it must. When it stays stretched for years, the elastic fibers inside it break down permanently. Losing the weight removes the volume underneath — but the envelope stays the size it was trained to be.

Excess skin is evidence of how much you lost. It is proof of success, not a sign of failure.

Time under stretch

The longer skin stayed expanded, the less it retracts.

Amount lost

Beyond roughly 80–100 lbs, loose skin is near-universal.

Age & genetics

Collagen quality declines and varies from person to person.

Am I a candidate?

Four questions. No procedure pitch.

This short assessment recommends a next step — not a surgery. Nothing is submitted and nothing is stored.

Tailored procedures for the massive weight loss patient.

Each plan is customized to the unique anatomy of a post-bariatric or post-GLP-1 body.

01

Total Body Lift

Circumferential removal of excess skin across the midsection, hips, back, and outer thighs. The procedure Dr. LoMonaco helped pioneer more than twenty years ago.

02

Breast Rebuilding

Restoring volume, position, and shape after major weight loss — using lift, auto-augmentation with your own tissue, implants, or a combination.

03

Arm & Thigh Contouring

Addressing upper-arm and inner-thigh laxity so the strength you built through your journey is finally visible.

Mommy makeover after weight loss

Some women need one. Many need something else.

A Mommy Makeover is the procedure most women have heard of, so it's the one they ask for. Sometimes it's exactly right. Often, the changes caused by major weight loss are different from the changes caused by pregnancy — and they need a different plan.

Our job is to build the right plan, not fit you into a predefined package.

Insurance vs. cosmetic

Plain language, no promises.

Every carrier and policy is different. We'll help you gather documentation and verify benefits, but we won't tell you what your plan will do before it tells us.

Usually cosmetic

Breast lift and rebuilding, arm and thigh lifts, body contouring performed primarily for shape and appearance.

Sometimes medically necessary

Panniculectomy for a hanging abdominal apron causing documented, recurring rashes, infections, or mobility limits — typically requiring photos, treatment history, and a stable weight record.

Financing

Monthly payment options are available for the cosmetic portion of any plan.

Recovery roadmap

You should know what every week will feel like.

  1. 01

    Before surgery

Labs, nutrition, protein targets, and a caregiver plan. Nicotine stops six weeks out.

  2. 02

    Week 1

Rest, drains, short frequent walks. Someone stays with you. Discomfort is managed, not endured.

  3. 03

    Weeks 2–4

Drains typically come out. Desk work often resumes. Swelling peaks and begins to settle.

  4. 04

    Weeks 4–6

Most restrictions lift. Light activity returns. You start seeing the real shape.

  5. 05

    Months 3–6

Swelling resolves, contours refine, energy fully returns.

  6. 06

    Scar maturation

Scars fade over 12–18 months with dedicated scar care.

  7. 07

    Long term

Weight stability, strength, and annual follow-up keep the result.

Questions patients actually ask

Straight answers, before you call.

Timing & candidacy

Rather than fixating on a certain goal weight, Dr. LoMonaco generally waits until your weight has been stable over several months. Most bariatric patients can consider plastic surgery about one year after their weight loss surgery. The right timing also depends on your original weight, your current BMI and body fat percentage, and which type of weight loss surgery you had.
